The amphoteric cellulose graft copolymer CGAD was synthesized by the graft copolymerization of sodium carboxymethylcellulose with dimethylaminoethyl methylacrylate and acrylamide. The compositions of CGAD were characterized by IR and elemental analysis. The solubility of CGAD in water depended on pH and the concentration of the added salt. The curves of intrinsic viscosity for CGAD versus pH in NaCl solution showed minima
indicating the existence of isoelectric point. At the same time
the intrinsic viscosity of CGAD solution decreased with increasing temperature. All these results showed the characteristics of the amphoteric polymer. Meanwhile the graft copolymer CGAD in aqueous solution could be degradated in presence of cellulose enzyme.
